'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." I got sick and tired of doing that because I wasn't advancing. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. I looked around and realized that my whole life had become everything Id worked so hard to be, and when I came back to have a regular life, I had to go find one. I wanted to play. I was reluctant to try to write some more, but now Ive been doing that, and its been a real experience. So when I hit the scene in Liverpool, I startled a lot of the drummers that were hanging around, because they hadn't heard of me and all of a sudden I was getting gigs and playing over the place. And life just said, I think youve got to go deal with this. Cause I was not happy with things in my life. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? And so they gave us an ultimatumyou either get a frontman, or were gonna drop you from the label. And I think Jon said, Well, just take some time off, and well think, and I said Okay, fine. And I just sort of fell back into my life. Anything worth anything has got to be that way. And I just love to see them love it so much. All through the years. Youre looking at it in a deep chronological way. We went back, and we started writing Raised on Radio. He went to bat for me in a huge way. So he sat in on two songs and then he came back and sat in my car and started chatting about session work in Los Angeles and how much money could be made and how I could make a good living out of it. But I needed to go home. I saw this English rock and roll program where they had three drummers sitting together doing a drum trio, and I got knocked out by what they were doing. It worked out really great. _[laughs] _Having people love you every night is a beautiful way to run away from things. But it's always interesting because he is a very good musician. After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. So in retrospect [laughs] maybe it wasnt the smartest thing I ever did, because he went, Well, Neals doin one, why cant I do one? And everybodys goin, Well, Neals not doin anything thats gonna conflict with Journey, yknow? "I played with Jeff for four months," Dunbar told me years ago. I still miss his playing. AD: A funny thing happened with that. A lot of times, I drive the band, not by playing every 16th note, but by playing the second, third and fourth 16th note, leaving the downbeat and the up- beat open. AD: Oh yes. I couldn't leave the people in my band just to do some wandering around the country, although it would have led to the Led Zeppelin gig, which was offered to me as well. But nothing really got any hotter. I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? **. Then when it came to the rest of the kit, I could get used to the sounds and the feel of the drums one at a time, and not be over powered by the immensity of the whole situation. All of the toms have both heads, and so do the bass drums. Journey got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame a few years ago. It was really intense. Then we'd go out on the road again and when I'd get back, I would have to start over again because I wouldn't have the chance to practice on the road. Lou had called a day off, so I was going to go, but when Lou found out about it, he called a recording session for that night. And that stars on the sidewalk. I joined the band in 1978. So to me, the stone was already cracked. Otherwise, the band would never know where the hell I was. I leave a gap on the downbeat and upbeat so if I want to play the snare there, it cuts right through without being diminished by the low-end sound of the bass drum. _[A few days after I talked to Perry, I did a follow-up interview with Neal Schon, Journeys co-founder and lead guitarist, in which we discussed some of the same issues Perry brought up. I just sort of rid of a lot of demons that were inside of me. I really dont. We were all lovin it. You made one more record together. So you were always opposed to that stuff? We have children together, which are the songs we wrote together, and we have a vested interest, as songwriters, in where they go and where they dont go. AD: The guys in the Starship know how to lock in and play as a band. ReallyI stay away from it, because its really none of my business now. You even had your own video game. I started Blue Whale, which was an 8-piece band. They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. But I didn't want to play that long. And as long as, at the end of the night, I heard what they felt about it, then I was good to go. It wasnt like we called each other and went, Okay, this is history, nice knowin ya. It was just sort of left at a hiatus. I think back in the day, there was a decision, by a couple of key editors, to never give us our just desserts. When I get involved in something I like to keep it going, day by day. I agree to that, but I don't agree that every time you have a fill, you have to play exactly the same thing that's on the record. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. I was back in my house February 1stIll never forget that date. It was a pretty heavy situation. I just tune them and that's about it. Much like a lot of people are. Hes saying, yknow, If these guys wanna go on, I think they should just start something new and not use the Journey name. Dont crack the stone is what he kept on saying. So you came back together, you made one more record, and then the band took a break. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. Theres definitely some decisions, that are pretty personal, that I wouldnt have done the way I did, because I was not thinking clearly. I was the new kid. In December 1964 he joined Merseybeat group the Mojos, who were renamed Stu James & the Mojos, with original members vocalist Stu James and guitarist Nick Crouch and bass player Lewis Collins (later an actor in The Professionals). Every night, after every show, I would get everything I needed to hear. And he picks Journey. Theres like 20 different prosthetics, all claiming to be the one that lasts, and I had to do research on that crap. Cause you know, they had a singer before me, named Robert Fleischmann. I've been collecting material for it. AD: I stay away from commercials. But our relationships by then were not the greatest. AD: Completely ad-Iib. So at the end of a night, you feel great. The more you play, the less they hear. Id had some pain in my left hip area before, but I didnt think nothin about it cause it would come and go. They wanted me to play note for note behind them, and I wouldn't do it. Cause we wanna get out there. That particular set of words. And Jon saidor Neal, I cant remember, it was so long agoOkay, well take some time off. And I said, You dont understand. I got a panic in me. And thats great. I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. Because since Mayhold on, Ive got the fax on my wall, in my studio. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. RM: It looks as though you are singing to yourself while you solo. I think in the end we all took Herbies advice, and it ended up being great advice. And fall back into my life. And a lot of time spent together can chew on a friendship. Otherwise we dont think that we can ever get anything on the radio. They wanted us to get on the radio. I drank a lot. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. Do you get tired of it being defined by his presence or his absence? It was so cool. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. So I just waited, knowing it was going to happen sometime. I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. They don't understand it. [laughs] But in those days it was a bomb. I got my review at the end of the night. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. AD: Three days a week. In the winter of 1969 Retaliation appeared at the 5-day Actuel Festival, which was also attended by Frank Zappa . RM: How did you decide on your particular style? And by the end of that tour, I was toast. I love doin it. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. And maybe its just my opinion. Ronnie Wood paid tribute to former bandmate Jeff Beck, saying he was untouchable when at his best.. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. Neal did a solo album way before I was thinking about it, with Jan Hammer. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum.
